The total cultivable land in Dhemaji district is 12,490 hectares, while 10,430 hectares of land is already uncultivable. It is considered barren. While 3,830 hectares of land is such that it was cultivated earlier. But now paddy cannot be cultivated due to the accumulation of sand.
The flood also washed away the houses
Assam’s district Medhipamua and more than 500 villages remain affected by the floods. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are carrying sand along with them. This sand has become a serious threat to agriculture. Most of the residents of the district belong to the Missing tribe. In some areas, people of Hajong, Bodo and Sonowal tribes also live along with Nepalis. All these people live on the banks of the river. More than 100,000 people were affected by three floods this year. Hundreds of houses were washed away by the rain.
